Why Local Elections Matter: Standing with Equal Ground for Fair Representation in Florida

When we say “We’re ALL Kissimmee,” it’s more than a slogan—it’s a commitment to building a city, a state, and a country where every voice is heard, and every vote is counted.

That’s why I’m standing in solidarity with Equal Ground and their urgent call for justice following the Florida Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold a redistricting map that silences Black voters in North Florida. This map dismantles the district once represented by Congressman Al Lawson—a district designed to ensure Black communities could elect a leader who reflects their lived experience and needs.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t just a court ruling. It’s a gut punch to democracy.

And while I’m running for Kissimmee City Commission, not Congress, I need you to understand something—change doesn’t start at the top. It starts right here, in our neighborhoods, in our local elections, and in our community halls.

When local leaders stay silent in moments like this, we normalize injustice. I won’t be silent.

As a community advocate, organizer, and candidate, I’m proud to partner with Equal Ground because their work represents the heartbeat of grassroots power—organizing Black and Brown communities to vote, to lead, and to hold power accountable. That’s what I’m doing here in Kissimmee, too. That’s how we win.

Florida has a long and painful history of voter suppression. We’ve seen it in book bans, in attacks on public education, and now—again—in the dismantling of a fair, constitutional congressional map. And yet, we keep showing up. We keep organizing. And we keep rising.

This is our moment to raise our voices louder than ever:

  • ✊🏽 Fight for fair representation.

  • ✊🏽 Empower our communities at every level—local, state, and national.

  • ✊🏽 Support organizations like Equal Ground who are in this fight every single day.

I’m running for office to make sure your voice is never ignored. I’m running because I believe in a Kissimmee that leads with equity, dignity, and courage. And I’m running because local elections are national issues—what we build here sends ripples across our state.

So let’s not just talk about change. Let’s be it.

Let’s protect the power of the people—starting right here at home.
